Travel in Turkmenistan May 2025

Post by charlottegholt »

Hi everyone!

I am 24F from the UK. I am looking to travel to Turkmenistan at the beginning of May next year. I have a lot of questions regarding how best to plan my trip!

I am looking to fly from Azerbaijan to Uzbekistan and then spend ~1 week doing a tour in Turkmenistan (starting and ending in Uzbekistan). Ideally, I would enter through Khiva and exit through Bukhara (or vice versa).

I have compiled a list of places that I would ideally like to visit. I know that travelling in Turkmenistan is expensive and I am on a budget so I want to explore a variety of options/I know that I probably won't be able to do all of the below. However, the places I am interested in are:

- Ashgabat
- Darvaza (I want to camp overnight)
- One of: Nisa, Merv, Konye-Urgench
- Kov-Ata Cave
- Yangkala canyon
- Mary (?)
- Koytendang (I've heard this is amazing!)
- A local, rural Turkmen village!

I would rather be on a tour with other people (for both company and price reduction!), hence why I've made this post. And I am absolutely flexible, those are just my ideas. So please get in touch if you are thinking about doing a similar thing. I know that I am super early in terms of my planning based on other posts, but I thought it was worth a shot!

Even if you just want to share some advice (such as good tour providers [I've been in touch with Lupine, Kyoro, and Ayan] /must-see places/anything at all really!), that would be very welcome!

Looking forward to hearing from you :)

There is this 7-day tour next May with Koryo Tours. Costs approx £1700 and includes everything but the visa.

https://koryogroup.com/tours/turkmenist ... r-beyond-1

I am planning to join it when it runs again next October.

While foreign companies are generally easier to book with, £1700 seems like a lot for a group tour. If you're interested in much cheaper options, I recommend contacting travel agencies listed on the official Turkmen Migration Services website (https://migration.gov.tm/pages/syyahat-karhanalar). Our tour didn't include all the things you mentioned, but we paid about $370 per person for a private tour and accommodation (5 people).

Thank you for this post.

Did you get your "Letter Of Invitation" [LOI] through those 'private tour' companies?
That's the major sticking point of visiting .TM , and going through a tour company takes away that "hassle" of a LOI.

Your prices are very good, because I got quoted prices in the US$ 1,500+ for 8+ days.
The most well-explained tour company I found was - https://www.saigatours.com/
The itinerary, costs, and most importantly, the dates, were all specified on the website.

Hi Charlotte,

I am also looking into visiting Turkmenistan in 2025.
However, I’m planning to do this in April or really early May 2025 and would probably only go with the 3 days /2 nights tour due as 7 days might be too expensive.
Hoping to get in touch with you. Thank you!
