Cycling the Pamir Highway from Osh to Dushanbe in June

I plan to cycle the Pamir Highway from Osh to Dushanbe in June. As I'm preparing for my tour I have a couple of questions people here might be able to help me with:

Do you suggest I bring a down jacket, long underwear, and gloves for evenings / mornings (I have a warm sleeping bag, so nights should be fine)?

How many days does one go without food?

What is your advice on getting local currency? Are there ATMs on the way? Should I bring US Dollars and exchange them locally, e.g. at a bank or hotel?

I'm using an iPhone 5 to take photos and for navigation in addition to the Swiss Gecko GBAO map. I carry an external battery. In addition, I'm wondering if I should get a solar panel so I don't run out of power. Any thoughts on this?

Are there places where one could get one a Tajik SIM card?

Do you have a suggestion for how to best get from Bishkek to Osh?

I cannot answer the first 2, remind me if no one else answered here in a few days, I will ask cyclists who did it.

On currency, read this: http://caravanistan.com/money/tajikistan/

On sim card, read this http://caravanistan.com/phone-internet/tajikistan/

Osh - Bishkek: it is possible to put your bike in a marshrutka if you take off the wheels and pedals. You can also fly cheaply, but not sure about the extra costs for the bicycle.

Hi SHK,

I forgot to answer your other questions. So I asked around and got an answer from WorldCycleVideos https://vimeo.com/groups/wereldfietser.

Stock up on everything in Dushanbe, Korogh + Murghab. Shops are scarce and don't have vegetables Sometimes closed or empty. You're going towards big altitude so be prepared for all weather circumstances.

Not super helpful, but hope it's a little piece of the puzzle.

I think it's about 4 days cycling without possibility for supplies.

Hi

we cycled the Pamirs three times, supply is getting better from year to year. We managed to buy a Sim card in Karakol, which is the first village after border and the first place with mobile coverage.
You only find ATM in Khorog and Khalaikum and Vanch (not on Pamir HWY), but I would only rely on the ones in Khorog and take enough $.
You need to cary food between Sary Tash in Kirgistan and Karakol, which should be 2 days cycling (but 1 or 2 days reserve is no bad idea), then to Murghab (2 days). In Murghab you find vegetables and fruit (from China).
Down jacket and gloves in june is no bad idea.

Enjoy it

Hi

have you been in the end?
I plane to go this year end August-mid-Sett. same questions you did ,how was it.

I have a question, It is available commercially in denatured alcohol to cook
the wind blows in that direction, it's best to do dushanbe- Osh or vice versa.

thanks

Davide

Hi Davide,

the consensus is that you're more likely to have tailwinds if you ride Dushanbe -> Khorog - Osh. Views are better in the other direction.

Alcohol for cooking is available in Dushanbe and Osh.
