Pamir Highway Weather and Bike Rental/Buying

Post by DaveFromUSA »

Hello! I am planning to cycle the pamirs from Osh to Dushanbe through the Wakhan Valley route starting Mid-May. Does anyone know if the weather will be good enough and the passes will be clear? (Especially at Ak-Baital?). I am also trying to find out if I can buy/rent a bicycle in Bishkek or Osh and if anyone has had luck there with panniers and repair kits as well!

Hello there

The Ak-Baital Pass being the highest pass in the Pamir Highwar has the least snow (it won't have snow in may) so don't worry about it. (Because the Eastern Part of the Pamir including the Ak-Baital pass gets the minimum precipitation in the region 70mm annual) but Kilir Art Pass (Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan border) and Koi Tezak Pass (between Murghab and Khorog) will have snow by that time but they are maintained and should remain open.
