South Gobi budget tour guide

Post by Ken »

Hey,

I'm just providing details on how to organise a cheap private south Gobi tour.

First you need to book a bus from Dragon bus terminal in Ulaanbaatar to Dalandzadgad (you can use the link below).

https://eticket.transdep.mn/

Please note the buses from UB run on Tues, Wed, Sat, Sun. Buses back to UB from Dalandzadgad run on Mon, Wed and Thurs.

We stayed at Bee happy hostel and organised a tour through them (https://www.facebook.com/battuul.alexander).

The cost was $310 USD for the car, driver and fuel.

You need to pay for food (10-15,000 MNT per meal) and accommodation (30,000 MNT per person per night) and buy the driver lunch. You stay with nomadic families and not in touristy Ger camps which is a bonus in my opinion.

One night we stayed with Nyamkaa and her family (At the Khongor dunes). She speaks english and wants to start organising tours. I'm sure she can give you a better rate!

If I came back and did the tour again I would book direct through Nyamkaa and our driver Baigali. Baigali doesn't speak English so you're best off contacting Nyamkaa and asking to do a tour with Baigali, he's the man!

Nyamkaa is on WhatsApp +976 8509 0005 or you can email her [email protected]

I have Baigali's mobile number +976 8880 0379 and Facebook should you wish to contact him (he doesn't speak English though)

Hi,

Thank you, this post was very helpful! We called Nyamkaa and organised 3 days with her. We got the bus from UB to Dalandzadgad (on Wednesday 3rd July), met her and her husband at the bus terminal and they took us for dinner.

On the first day, we went to the Yoliin Am Valley, rode horses and then drove to their desert camp.
On the second day, we took camels into the desert, visited the springs and in the evening went up the nearby dunes at Khongoryn Els.
On the third day, we drove through the desert and went to the spectacular rocks at Bayan Zag.

I'm vegetarian and my partner doesn't eat red meat. Pretty challenging in Mongolia, but they were very accommodating, sorted out all meals for us, and it wasn't a problem.

It was overall excellent, she speaks good English (her husband doesn't speak any), and they are very welcoming and friendly, and are a real nomadic family.

Sounds good! How much did you have to pay for this?

I wouldn't necessarily anchor to this exactly, she was still figuring out how much to charge and her costs.

We paid $120pp/pd for 3 days (so $720) although that included 4 evenings of accommodation and meals (2 in Dalanzadgad)
