How do Americans Get Cars for the Silk Road?

Post by elzy »

Hi Everyone,

I am planning in 2022 to drive from Greece to China (borders pending) but I am struggling to see what is the best option for getting a car. It seems my option is to buy a car in the US and ship it which is currently very expensive due to supply chain shortages. Or, try and buy a car in Greece (or maybe Turkey) but that seems even more expensive and perhaps not possible for non Europeans?

Just curious to see what others have done or if anyone has any insight?

Thanks!

China won't be possible next year, I guess.

There's an option regarding the car. Will only work if you have some friends or relatives in the EU.

You buy the car in the EU. The EU national registers it in his/her name. Legally it is his/her car.

You write down that you are allowed to use the car and drive it over borders/leave the EU. You need Power of attorney, have to visit a solicitor and need a translation in all the languages of the countries you intend to visit.

Once this is sorted out you're free to roam.

Of course there are tons of details... But you'll sort them out😉

Thanks this is great! I do have some family in Greece, I think this will be a backup plan if I can't get a good deal back here!
