Self-driving Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Usbekistan

Post by Verena vy »

hi all,

We are already in Bishkek and are planning to get a car and travel around Kyrgyzstan, Pamir Highway, Wakhan valley in Tajikistan and the major attractions in Uzbekistan. We have a few remaining questions - would be grateful for any advice:

1) for those places do we need a jeep 4x4 wheel drive or is a station wagon with 4x4 ok?
2) is it allowed to enter Uzbekistan and Tajikistan as self drivers with a Kyrgyz car?
3) ok to have a "friend's" car rather than a car from a rental company?
4) are there areas where car theft is a severe issue? We would want to sometimes leave it for a few days and go hiking.
5) are there any import documents needed for crossing boarders? If yes, where to get them?

Thank you so much!

1. Both are possible but a jeep is better of course. I for one like to have a high clearance on these bad roads
2. Yes
3. You need a dovorennost, your friend can explain

Just seen this thread. Would be grateful for any advice on car theft and how to guard against it (will be self driving the Pamirs in a Lada Niva next month).

edwardo123. Err... thats a pretty easy car to steal. But in reality its not likely to happen. Tha Pamirs has some of the nicest people in the world. Just like at home, dont leave your car in a dodgy place with valuable stuff in it.
