Handing over motorbike in India

Postby rudolf » Thu Apr 26, 2018 5:29 pm

Hi guys,

I would like to reach out to fellow travelers who are experienced in the carnet de passage procedure or have faced a similar situation as I do:

I want to go with my motorbike from Austria to India via the Stans, China and Northern Pakistan (Karakorum Highway).
There I would like to hand over my bike to my father who is riding back via Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, etc.
I would fly back.

My current idea is to get a carnet de passage for my motorbike on my name. Luckily my father's middle name is my first name. Therefore, he might be able to use the documents as if he was me (pretending this is the way Austrians handle their names or some similar BS). Looking at some carnet de passage examples, I did not notice that personal information like date of birth is stated there. However, it might get troublesome, if I have the motorbike stamped in my passport when entering the country. This way, they probably won't let me fly out of the country.

Question 1: Does the Wagah border control mark my vehicle in the passport?
Question 2: Can you think of any other way to hand over a motorbike and being allowed to leave the country?
Question 3: How likely is it, that this whole plan will end up in a huge mess?

Thank you very much upfront for your thoughts!

Best,
Rudolf

I will try to answer to questions I have a reasonable answer for:

Question 1: Does the Wagah border control mark my vehicle in the passport?

No, they will stamp the carnet only. You can leave the country by air no problem. Bike should be exported in the next 6 months.

Question 2: Can you think of any other way to hand over a motorbike and being allowed to leave the country?

Hand over? Not so easy I think with a carnet stamped.
You can ship it by sea or by air, but I would suggest you to add a few more days to your trip and to go to Nepal.
It is an incredibly beautiful country and shipping by air from Kathmandu is easy. Reasonable prices and no-stress procedure. Reports I read from India are always bad regarding procedures.

Question 3: How likely is it, that this whole plan will end up in a huge mess?

High, but not THAT high. In the end, it is always Asia. Time is the real thing that you need when you are in Asia.
