Advice on first draft of Itinerary

Postby Hussain » Thu Aug 22, 2019 2:33 am

Hello everyone, we are 3 guys from Singapore about to travel across Central Asia for the first time in 2 weeks time. As we are not really sure how it is like moving about there, we would really appreciate any advice to our itinerary. If you think we should take some places or add some places it be good too. We've backpacked around but we understand this particular region has it's own challenges.

1- Singapore - Kazakhstan
2- Almaty, KZ - Bishkek, KG
3- Bishkek, KG
4- Bishkek, KG - Karakol, KG
5- Karakol, KG
6- Karakol, KG
7- Karakol, KG - Kochkur, KG
8- Kochkur, KG
9- Kochkur,KG - OSH, KG
10- Osh, KG - Lenin Peak, TJ (start of pamir highway trip)
11- TJ
12- TJ
13- TJ
14- TJ
15- TJ
16- Khorog, TJ (end of pamir highway trip)
17- Khorog, TJ - Dushanbe,YJ
18- Dushanbe, TJ
19- Dushanbe, TJ - Samarkand, UZ
20- Samarkand, UZ
21- Samarkand, UZ
22- Samarkand, UZ - Almaty, KG (by domestic flight)
23- Almaty, KZ - Bishkek, KG
24- Almaty,KZ
25- Almaty, KZ - Singapore

Thanks in advance, bless you all.

You can't easily go from Kochkor/Song-kul to Osh, unless you have pre-booked a private car (which you can probably do pretty easily, given there are 3 of you).

If you don't want to book a private car to take you over the Kazarman pass, you could go from Almaty to Karakol via Charyn Canyon and Kegen, then go up to Bishkek after Kochkor/Song-kul, and fly or drive down to Osh from Bishkek.

Three full days in Samarkand is a bit much. You could even squeeze in Bukhara and Samarkand in three days. But on the other hand it is nice to have some buffer time built in, as it's pretty typical for something to go wrong and to lose a day or so compared to what you planned.

Hej Hussain,

I wonder about day 10 - 17
From Sary Mogul/ Peak Lenin to Khorog you could easily go as follows:
11 to Murgab
12 to Alichur or Bulunkul
13 to Khorog
14 extra day
15 to Kalaikhum
16 to Dushanbe

Khorog zu Dushanbe on one day ist possible but quite hard.
2 days are much more comfortable

Alternatively, you can visit the Whakan Corridor

13 to Alichur (via Langar)
14 to Khorog
15 extra da
16 to Kalaikhum
17 to Dushanbe

I agree that 3 days in Samarkand are a bit much.

Happy travelling!

Hey there, thank you so much for your advice. Apart from spacing out Samarkand as a buffer, do you think the other days are alright? Or should we take some of it out of it sounds too adventurous?

Cheers,

Hi Dave! Thank you so much for breaking down a pamir highway route for us and your advice on travelling back to Dushanbe. We definitely would break it down into 2 days. Apart from that, do you think the whole plan is too rushing or is it alright given the large distances and high altitudes we be covering?

cheers,
Hussain

Hej,

I have to correct myself reg. the alternative / Whakan Route.

13 stay in Yamchun ( Bibi Fatima ) NOT Alichur. I can recommend Akims Homestay left Hand Side in the 'road' to the hot springs.

To answer your question...

The time frame is fine, we did it just like this but other direction this may. We were riding on motorbikes, but any kind of car/bike will be fine.
Although.... Consider that the roads in Whakan Corridor and Khorog to Kalaikhum & to kulob ( the Stretch along the River) are unmaintained roads with Lots of potholes, Stones, .....

I know of 2 Guys whose Bikes Suspension / rim broke... so it's good to have at least one, better two extra days, Just in Case Shit happens.
We planned with 2 days + , but did mit need them.

One more issue is that the ascend from Osh to Ak-Baital & Murgab is extremely rapid.

We Had some issues sleeping at 4000+ metres in Alichur / First night high Up. Next night was fine.

Hope that helps

Safe travelling,

Dave
