From Teheran to Tashkent in april

Postby jackfack » Sun Aug 25, 2019 10:40 pm

Hi buddies,
I would like to make my first move in the silk road in april 2020.

My dream would be to begin the trip in Teheran then go eastward to Mechhed, cross the border of Tukmenistan, visit Mary, cross the Uzb. border near Khiva then go downward to Bukhara, Samarkand and fly back.

I have 3 weeks.

I would be very eager to receive your first remarks, questions. I need to improve.

(I'll be 50, I have traveled by myself & would be alone)

That's very doable in 3 weeks, and fairly straightforward so long as you successfully get a Turkmen transit visa.

I think in 3 weeks you can add a bit more even: take a day or 2 in Ashgabat, visit either Esfahan or Khiva/Nukus, or the Ferghana Valley towns.

Nice to read an itinerary that is not overly ambitious for a change!

Thank you very much for these answers, very encouraging.

IRAN : 6 days
Teheran : 3 days
Train : 1 day
Mechhad : 1 day
Border crossing : 1 day

TURKMENISTAN : 4 days
Ashgabat : 2 days (including transport to Mary)
Mary : 1 day
Border Crossing : 1 day

UZBEKISTAN : 10 days
Khiva : 1 day + 1 day around Nukus (desert castles ?)
Transport to Bukhara : 1 day
Bukhara : 3 days
Samarcand : 2 days
Bishkek : 2 days

**********************

Do I have to worry about security issues ? I don't think so but I prefer to ask.

My main worry is the border crossing : I'll search the forum but any tips welcomed :)

About Turkmenistan transit visa : any tips ?

Again, thanks !

Security is fine.

But Samarkand to Bishkek? Don't see the logic of that, Bishkek is not that interesting, and difficult to connect to Samarkand. From Samarkand you can go to Penjikent and Khujand to see something different, or if you rather not pay for the visa, go to Osh and then in the mountains of Alay, but then you need some more time.

For Iran Teheran 3 days ia bit much.
There's some things to see there; but the city is quite polluted, traffic is horrible...; it's not the highlight of a visit to Iran.

I would try to see something else in Iran as well; though of course since you want to stay in the North you won;t be able to visit Persepolis or Isfahan for example. Maybe you can stop in Hamedan or Qom for example.

Sorry, Tashkent, not Bishkek. I don't know why I mix this 2 cities.
