Hi All, I'm travelling early around May 1, 2020 using Pamir Highway. One of the agent quoted USD 1700 per car with the driver for 10 days trip from Osh-Dushanbe. Includes car, driver and his meals and accommodation, fuel, border taxes, side hikes, transfer to Afaginstan border and pick at the border the next day. Not included: your meals and accommodation, guide, entrance tickets, bottled water, side trip out of the itinerary, visa and any service in Afganistan. Below is the itinerary the agent suggested. What's your view on the price and itinerary?
DAY 1. OSH – SARYMOGOL VILLAGE – TULPARKOL LAKE AT LENIN PEAK BASE CAMP
Driving: 4-5 hours; Accommodation: yurtstay
Breakfast. Drive to Sarymogol village, 4hr. A nice valley opens up when you reach Taldyck pass (3600 meters) with green pastures and yaks grazing around. Arrival in Sarymogol village and cross the bridge to get to yurt camp at Tulparkol lake (3500 m) next to Lenin Peak Base Camp, 1hr. Enjoy the beauty of snowcapped mountains. Walk around this turquoise alpine lake Tulparkol. Overnight & dinner in a yurt.
DAY 2. TULPARKOL LAKE – BORDER CROSSINGS – KARAKUL LAKE
Driving: 4-5 hours; Accommodation: homestay; Hiking: 5-6 hours
Early breakfast. Take a day hike from your yurt camp to the Traveler’s pass at 4130 meters, 3 hrs. Enjoy the beauty of glaciers while walking up to the pass. Rest at the top of the Traveler’s pass to gaze at glaciers tumbling off the massive peak. Back to your yurts, 2 hrs. Lunch in a yurt. Drive to the checkpoint, 2hr. Cross the borders and travel to Karakul lake in Tajikistan, 2 hrs. The totally different landscape opens up confirming that this is Tajikistan. Be accommodated in a guesthouse. A short walk around the lake.
DAY 3. KARAKUL LAKE - MURGAB VILLAGE – OBSERVATORY HILL – ALICHUR VILLAGE
Driving: 5-6 hours; Accommodation: homestay;
Travel goes on to Murgab via the highest pass Akbaital (4655 m) you will ever do in Tajikistan, 3hr. Take photos of glaciers on the pass. Lunch in Murgab village. Head on to Alichur village, 3 hrs. On the way, we take a side trip to Observatory Hill. You will see a nice view of Muztak Ata peak of China on top of the hill if no clouds in the sky. Down the hill, there is a Soviet truck full of skulls of Marco Polo sheep inside. Once upon a time, it was a hunting camp. Back to the main road and drive to Alichur village. Overnight and dinner in a guesthouse.
DAY 4. ALICHUR – KARGUSH PASS – WAKHAN VALLEY - LANGAR VILLAGE
Driving: 5-6 hours; Accommodation: homestay; Hiking: 3 hours
Breakfast. Take a side trip to visit alpine Bulunkul & Yashylkul lakes with nice hot springs. Drive back to the main road and head up to the Kargush pass (4 344m). Arrival at the Kargush pass and start the 3-4 hrs trek to Panorama Ridge at 4800 meters. While walking up, two small lakes behind you at the roadside open up to cheer you. Enjoy the stunning mountain scenery of Great Pamir on the Afghan border on top of the pass. Walk back to your car. After the pass, drive down to the Afghanistan border for another checkpoint to check your GBAO permit. Road follows the river Pamir all the way to Wakhan valley with the chance to admire the Big Pamir of Afghanistan with nomadic Afghan Kyrgyz caravans. Great rugged Hindu Kush mountain ranges welcome you right before entering Wakhan valley. Overnight and dinner in a friendly homestay in Langar village.
DAY 5. LANGAR VILLAGE – YAMCHUN FORTRESS - ISHKASHIM VILLAGE – KHOROG CITY
Driving: 5-6 hours; Accommodation: homestay/hostel/hotel
Breakfast. Right after you leave your guesthouse, we do a side trip to admire the 12thcentury Yamchun Fortress rising from a platform of natural rock. Walk up to edge of the fort and you will have an amazing view of Wakhan valley. Further up the hillside are located the hot springs of Bibi Fatima, with its crystal waters rich in minerals. Back to the main road. Another fortress Khaaka comes up along the way at Namadgut village when you get closer to Ishkashim village. It is worth a 10 minutes stop. Continue to drive to Khorog city. Afternoon visit the interesting Regional Museum and Central Park of Khorog city. Evening hike in a Botanical Garden that has various plants and trees to explore. Dinner at a cafe. Night in a hotel.
DAY 6. GETTING VISA - BORDER CROSSING TO AFGANISTAN
We visit the Afganistan consulate to get a visa. If you manage to get it before noon, then we drive to the border crossing to Afghanistan, 3 hours. Our driver stay on Tajikistan side and you do the rest on your own. You cross the border and walk to Sultan Ishkashim. Be accommodated in one of the homestays there.
DAY 7. BACK TO THE BORDER - KHOROG CITY.
After you have breakfast in Afganistan, walk back to the border. After you cross, you will meet your driver and stay in Khoroc city.
DAY 8. KHOROG TO JISEU VALLEY
Driving: 4 hours; Accommodation: homestay; Hiking: 2-3 hours
Today you drive towards the Bartang Valley and begin an adventure that may prove to be your favorite part of the trip. The 4x4s will drop you off at the trailhead to Jizeu Valley and you will commence a truly spectacular 2-hour hike to the remote Jizeu Village. The views you will discover on this hike are barren and wild, and this is known for being one of the real highlights of the Pamir Highway, that very few travelers visit. There are no roads to this village, so you will need to take your supplies for one night staying with local families. You do not need to bring much with you – just a change of clothes, medication, water for the hike and your camera gear, and everything else will stay with our driver in the 4x4s. You will have lunch and dinner in the Jizeu Village. This is an isolated region, and you will only be able to organize your accommodation once you arrive in the village. Food, blankets, pillows and water is provided at the homestay. After you arrive in your homestay, find a time to hike into the gorge.
DAY 9. JIZEU VILLAGE – KHALAIKHUM VILLAGE
Driving: 3-4 hours; Accommodation: homestay; Hiking: 2-3 hours
Wake up for sunrise in the remote Jizeu Valley before having breakfast. Once you collect your belongings, you say goodbye to your wonderful hosts and hike back towards the main road. Our driver will meet you where you were dropped off yesterday and we will continue the journey towards Kalaikhum with plenty of photo stops along the way. In Kalaikhum, you can stay in a comfortable homestay.
DAY 10. KALAIKHUM TO DUSHANBE
Driving: 6-7 hours; Accommodation: homestay/hostel/hotel
Breakfast. Travel to Dushanbe along the Panj river through numerous local villages along the way. Deep rocky valleys and gorgeous mountains accompany you up to the Shurobod pass before Kulab village. Lunch in a Chaikana (local cafes). Visit 11th-century Hulbuk Palace on the way and enjoy the views of the world’s highest hydropower station Nurek in a distance. Arrival in Dushanbe. Accommodation in your hotel.
