Industrial sites along the silk road

Post by paintsniffer »

Hi,

I am currently planning a trip overland from Istanbul to Singapore and am personally enthralled by industrial sites, places which humans have completely ruined. So far I only have Bogatyr Coal Mine which is accessible (I wanted to see the Baikonur space centre but it’s inaccessible to me as I have a UK passport).

Has anyone got any recommendations of places like this in the Stans/ China which could be accessible to a foreigner? Mining sites huge factories and refineries are all interesting to me.

Cheers

Every city in Kazakhstan has huge industrial sites.

Ekibastuz has a huge coal mine
Around Karaganda, especially Temirtau
Oskemen
Lots of oil and gas exploration in West Kazakhstan around Aktobe and Atyrau

Of course plenty of ghost towns, just a few mentioned on the map above.

Thanks for the detailed reply! Apart from the coal mines, are these others places accessible? would I be able to go on a tour of Temirtau for example?

Thanks!

On the topic of ruins, Enylchek city in Kyrgyzstan - though I've never been - is meant to be quite interesting.
