I would spend enough time in the Kashgar area to see Tashkurgan and Hotan, as they have a very different and perhaps more 'authentic' feel than the heavily-Russified CIS 'stans.

Again, because of overnight trains and their schedules, I would consider Bukhara, Samarkand, and Khiva in that order (or Khiva, Smarkand, then Bukhara, depending on train schedules), as time savings can be achieved. Check schedules here or at seat61.com.

Some people really like Khiva, but for me it was the most intensely touristic and the buildings are all fairly recent and crammed into a smaller core.

Your goals in Karakol/Jeti Oguz and Kochkor are likely going to be the same (outdoors activities and hiking/trekking), so it might be possible to save some time by combining the two if necessary.

I haven't been to Tash Rabat, but since it's in the middle of nowhere some kilometers off of a sparsely-traveled road to China, you basically have to make it to Naryn and then charter private transportation. Not worth the time and cost, in my opinion.

Hi violetc,

I agree with bwv. I have no idea who you are and what you like, of course, but seeing how you phrase your question already, I would say, skip Khiva. Skip Tash Rabat too, it is a bit of a hassle to get to if you don't have your own transport, and it's just an old building. Nice location, though, and do advise to go there if you have time, have your own transport etc, but in your case, it will be more enjoyable to stay longer in a backpacker-friendly place like Karakol.
