Several months trip in Central Asia : week in Almaty (9-16th May)

Hi everybody !
We're a french couple and we've been travelling since a month and we still have 3 months and a half to go ! We began our journey in St-Petersbourg, and we travelled by train through Russia. Since friday, we're in Semey (Kazakhstan). We plan to do (almost) all the "stans" in the next months. In the order : Kazakhstan, Kirghizstan, Tajikistan through Pamir road, Uzbekistan, brief return in western Kazakhstan on the Caspian Sea,and transit through Turkmenistan. We'd like to arrive end of July/beginning of August in Iran for the last month of travel.
For now : we'll arrive on tuesday (9th of May) in Almaty, and we'd like to stay there for more or less a week. We've read some very useful information on this great website (it's a real goldmine, thank you), but if you have any specific advices, we would be happy to hear from your experiences. More specifically, if any of you is in Almaty these days and want to share an hour or a day with us (for example a hike around Almaty), write us. We're happy to meet new people along the trip!
