I read Steven's post (insightful, thanks!) but just wanted to see if any one has any suggestions for insurance for an Australian (or worldwide) that DOESN'T require the trip to be starting in country of residence. (I wasted a lot of money in the past on a policy without realising this )
Also going to be to cycling and heading up to higher altitudes in the Pamirs - I guess there's going to be no way to avoid paying an incredible fortune to be covered for everything necessary right?

Re: Recommendations for Travel Insurance
I bought World Nomads coverage over the internet while I was in Kyrgyzstan and needed coverage for my Iranian visa. Ended up making a claim for a camera lens I broke, and came out ahead.

Re: Recommendations for Travel Insurance
It feels good when it works out! I've successfully made a claim once, but every other time something happened I wasn't covered, and every other time I paid for insurance nothing happened ha!
I didn't realize coverage is a requirement for Iranian Visa? That's completely black and white?

Re: Recommendations for Travel Insurance
I've only heard of a few consulates where they don't require proof of insurance, so it does seem to be a pretty strict requirement (but apparently if you fly in and get VoA you can buy insurance for a few dollars so it).

Anybody know of CASCO car insurance policy I could buy? My European insurer seems unwilling.
