Taking a large group to Central Asia - can it be done?

I am planning a 30th birthday trip to the Central Asia republics (Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan); several of my relatives have expressed an interest in going which means that I could have as many as 7 people including myself going.

Does anyone have any experience travelling in these countries with so many people? My main concern is getting taxis (do seven seaters exist? Is it possible to get two taxis at a time?); and would we be able to find sufficiently large accommodation - i.e. for 7 people.

If anyone has any insight into travelling in groups, or thoughts on whether it would work, I would really appreciate it as I can't find any information on this online (google searches for "group" travel in the -stans just sends me to tour operators unsurprisingly).

Cheers.

For the most part it will be easier with more people. You can fill a vehicle all by yourself, no no need to wait for it to fill up. You may be able to cram 7 people into a Pajero, but it's probably not something you want to do, so fill up 2 cars and buy a couple of the empty seats. A lot of homestays can accommodate 7 people, but make sure your relatives are aware of what standards to expect: squat outhouse toilets and communal bedding on the floor can be expected, though some/many places offer a higher standard.

Thank you bwv812 - great to get a reply (and a positive one at that). Your point about being able to fill up cars etc is good and I will be very transparent with my family about living conditions.

One follow up question: do you think there will be enough home-stays along the Pamir highway for 7 people? I've read that while travelling along the highway it is standard to roll into a village and basically pay to stay at local peoples homes. Would it just require staying with 2-3 families instead of one or will that be challenging with 7 people?

Thanks for your very helpful response again.

A Mercedes Sprinter is the ideal vehicle for such a group. Plenty of those in Kyrgyzstan. Otherwise, easy to just fill up 2 cars. Plenty of homestays etc as well. I agree with previous posters that things are a lot easier and cheaper if you travel in a group. You do not have to wait for others and prices are much lower since you can share the costs.

It is preferred, really. Enjoy the planning!
