Turkmenistan - itinerary and cost

Post by down-to-details »

First of all I should say that I cannot stop praising Caravanistan and the team behind for all the useful info on this website.

I am trying to to a quick and economical trip via Turkmenistan which looks like this:

1 day - morning arrival in Ashgabat, tour of the city, afternoon departure for Darvaza - camping
2 day - return from Darvaza, depart for Nokhur, Underground Lake - camping
3 day - return from Nokhur, pass by Nissa. Evening flight to Mary - hotel
4 day - visit Mary, cross the border into Uzbekistan via Farap-Alat border crossing

Now, the questions:
- What are the chances I am granted transit visa? Could I get in trouble if someone checks my documents around Darvaza / Nokhur?
- I already checked with tour agencies and I get quotes between 500$-900$ per person for this trip. I really find it very hard to justify such cost. Does anyone has suggestion on how to drive the cost down?

Thanks for the praise, I should put a donate button up or something...

1. Dunno, most seem to get 3 days now. no trouble I have heard of from others.

2. Go with others, only way to make it cheaper. Why is it so expensive? They don't want you to come, unless you bring your money.

Turkmenistan tours are indeed astronomically expensive. Even StanTours, for example, isn't cheap, though my trip wasn't as much because I joined an existing tour with two other guys. If you email most tour agencies they will give you an idea of which tours you can join.

Forgot to note - most people I've met have had 4-day transit visas, sometimes 5.
