Dushanbe to Samarkand

Postby yulbud » Sat Apr 28, 2018 1:46 pm

Hello, I have few days from Dushanbe to Samarkand.

Please advise about my plan below.
1-May, leave Dushanbe for Penjikent or Khodjan.
2-May, day trip to Iskander kul or Fan Mountain
3-May, crossing the border from Penjikent to Samarkand.

Can I do it by public transportation?
Or better to charter a taxi or transportation from travel agents?

I am also looking at crossing the Penjikent border in June after visiting Dushanbe. There is not a ton of information available online since it opened to foreigners so recently, but from what I have gathered, it looks that marshrutkas and shared taxis leave Dushanbe for Penjikent in the morning each day, but this is NOT at the normal bus station. You will want to go to the cement factory stand in the north of town. Should cost about $15 USD for the 4-6 hour drive to Penjikent. From Penjikent to the border, you can get a taxi (it is only ~30 minutes). After crossing the border, there should also be taxis available on the other side to take you to Samarkand (another short drive).

I think it will be fairly difficult to visit Iskander Kul (or elsewhere in the Fanns) by public transportation given your schedule. There's not a lot of traffic, and while it might be possible to get a share car in the high season, I wouldn't bet on being able to get there and back in the same day.

You should visit Iskanderkul from Dushanbe and stay over there for the night, then continue the next day towards Penjikent.

As an alternative, I would suggest Haft Kul from Penjikent on day 2, stay overnight there and go to Samarkand on day 3.

For the itinerary mentioned, I have to hire a taxi myself?

Is there any recommended travel agent or driver that I can hire?

Sure, we can recommend you a travel agent who can arrange everything for you. Please fill in the form at https://caravanistan.com/custom-tours/ and we will get it sorted for you :-)
