Pamir Highway altitude sickness?

Postby LeefromWaipu » Thu Mar 12, 2015 5:33 am

We are a group of five motorcyclists from Australia, currently riding from KL, Malaysia, and entering Kazakhstan at Korgas (from China), and heading south to do the Stahns and Iran before going on to Turkey and Europe. We have the Kazakhstan visa and are applying on the road for the rest (due to time constraints on the visas). Can we get our Tajikistan Visa and GBAO somewhere in the north e.g. Bishkek or Osh (or do we have to go to Dushanbe and then backtrack)?
Have also heard that Osh to Murghab in one day causes altitude sickness. Can we alleviate this doing it more slowly and does gingko actually work?
Any other travel tips for "this way round" would be greatly appreciated. ;)

for your visa question, see "embassy reports" at and for GBAO

Osh - Murghab golden rule is: do not sleep more than 400m higher than the night before once above 3500m. A stop-over at Tulpar Kol is recommended. If you have more time, it's a glorious area for hiking ... ticalities has more on altitude sickness ... king/alay/ more on trekking ... lers-pass/ more on Tulpar Kol

I drove from Osh to Murghab in 2,5 days and only had a small headache on the second day. My riding buddy drove from Jallalabad to Karakul in one day and was having a shitty day the first two days, so definitely wouldn't recommend that.

people are very different in regards to altitude.
I drove end July from Osh to Karakul at once, by car. Late in the evening I just felt like if I had a couple drinks. Nothing else. My travel friend had just a big headache until the morning.

We stopped near Sary Moghul (yurt camp at Turparkul) for a night between Osh and Murghab, which I would recommend. It was a lovely isolated spot, just a couple of yurts. We didn't really get any altitude sickness issues, but everyone's different.
