I finally took the train on a round trip from Dushanbe to the south. The view was surprisingly good.

The cost? 10 Somoni (about $1) from Dushanbe to Qurghonteppa (4.5 hours). The schedule is different than what is posted on the Tajik Rail website. Click the link through to Youtube for more links with additional information.
