I didn’t know there was a crossing at Esanboy. It’s probably a bi-lateral crossing only ?

Yes, it's remote. Foreigners aren't even allowed without a permit on the Uzbek side, if I am not mistaken.

There isn't a crossing. It's a GKNB checkpoint on a Tajikistan-to-Tajikistan road run by border guards, not a crossing. It's the same as what you'll go through on the Pamir highway in a few spots. The border guards also patrol border districts with no crossings and have checkpoints in these areas. Some of them you can't be in without a permit as a foreigner.
