Does anyone have any updates on the current situation around the Caucasus? Was planning to fly into Baku, apply for a Turkmen transit visa, then spend a month or so in Georgia/Armenia while that processes, then transit across the sea to Turkmenistan.

Is the ferry to Turkmenistan running these days? Is Turkmenistan granting any transit visas? Are land borders in the Caucasus in the open? (obviously the ones to Iran are closed).

Was hoping to fly into Azerbaijan at the end of April, so who knows what will be going on then. But right now, the situation seems to be getting worse rather than better.

Like the first post of this thread says: No tourists at all are allowed into Turkmenistan at this moment, at least until the end of the month. This could change of course a lot by the end of April, so it’s impossible to predict what it’s going to be like at that moment. But since Turkmenistan is taking the strictest travel restrictions in the world (together with North Korea and Israel) in this crisis I would expect them to be one of the last countries to accept tourists as normal, even if the corona situation drastically improves.

But again it’s impossible to say at this point, the situation in East Asia seems to be improving and in Western Europe it seems to be getting worse, so I would recommend making back up plans and waiting it out if you can, since a lot can change.

The countries in the Caucasus themselves seem pretty alright at this moment by the way and I think all internal borders are open at this moment (except the usual closed Azerbaijan-Armenia border).

It seems that Kazakhstan is refusing entry to people from the countries that are listed even if they have not been in their home country for some time. At least the letter from the german ambassador in Kazakhstan suggests this. Does anyone have first hand experience about this?

We had one such traveller from Italy who got refused in Kyrgyzstan. I can imagine the same in Kazakhstan. People are panicking in Kazakhstan - supermarkets are empty. I expect border guards to play it safe.

We are a Romanian couple and just left Almaty 4 days ago going to Bishkek. In Khazakhstan most of the people don't care about Corona. At least in the southern part that we visited (Shimkent-Almaty). Supermarkets are operating normally and people go on with their daily lifes. Not even masks on the streets. At the Border with Kyrgyzstan (Karasu because Korday is closed for foreigners - renovation they say) there is a medical team that checks your temperature and asks to see your pasport. When we said we are from Romania they raised an eyebrow "europe yes" i said "yes Romania is in europe but we haven't been in europe in 4 months". They checked our visas and stamps and said "davay, welcome to Kyrgyzstan". The immigration office went also smoothly. Now here in Kyrgyzstan people also don't seem to be that much affected by the whole thing. As long as you're not sick and go by yoursef to the hospital, they don't even care if you cough just because of the pollution, or because something is wrong with you. Here supermarkets are also normal, people don't wear masks and no Panic is created, even though they had a couple of cases of people testing postive.

"Kyrgyzstan introduces home quarantine for travellers from 16 countries" https://en.fergana.ru/news/116012/
Until now, Kyrgyzstan has been placing people arriving from China, South Korea, Italy, Iran and Japan (category 1 countries in terms of spread risk) in a 14-day hospital quarantine. This measure will be continued. But an additional list of 16 countries has been drawn up, with travellers from these countries required to undergo self-isolation. This list is composed of France, Germany, Spain, Singapore, the USA (category 2 countries) and Kuwait, Bahrain, Thailand, Taiwan, Switzerland, Great Britain, Australia, Malaysia, Canada, Iraq and the UAE (category 3).
