Bazargan to Gurbulak (Iran/Turkey) border crossing Q&A

Postby Ian and Jo » Sat Oct 31, 2015 6:25 am

We have to leave Iran tomorrow (1st Nov) as our Visa is about to expire. We plan to exit from Bazargan.
Does anyone have any news about security / problems? We heard that there is an election being held that day - is that any reason for concern?

So to answer this myself, it was a swift problem-free border crossing. Hardly anyone else crossing though so we had to take a taxi to Dogubayuzit.
There was some parading in the streets in anticipation of the election results.

Hi Laroco,
we (german & australian) have travelled through Eastern Turkey (Adana, Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Batman, Van, Dogubayazit) by motorbike 10 days ago and crossed the border into Iran at Bazargan. We have had no problems at all, neither travelling through Turkey nor crossing the border. Crossing the border took us 2,5 hours, no inspection of our luggage. Received apples as a gift from border officers instead. The "agent" who arranged passport and Carnet stamps got 30$ for the both of us and was happy. All went easy and well and people in Turkey and also in Iran are just great!

We have met some dutch bikers yesterday in Yazd though who told us that, just to be on the safe side, they have told people in Turkey they were germans to avoid problems due to the recent discussions between Holland and Turkey. Yet, I as a German, have been welcomed very friendly even though there are problems between german and turkish government as well and I very much doubt that any disguise like that is necessary. Our experience of the last three weeks is: People are good. It´s only politics that suck!! And all turkish people we met agreed on that. :)

Save travels,
Cat

PS: which route are you travelling and in which time frame? We are going to Mongolia as well. Maybe we will meet somewhere en route?

Hi Cat

Thanks for your reply, very informative and kind. Just a quick question what do you mean by agent ? Did you hire someone at the border or prior to your travels ?

We will be in Mongolia beginning of July, and would love to meet up with fellow overlanders by bike, motorbike or car :-) along the route.
Our route takes us from Iran, to Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tadjikistan (pamir highway) , Kirigistan, Kazachstan, Russia and then Mongolia.

Save and great travels to you too

Hi again,
No, we didnt hire anyone. It is normal procedure that plenty of fixers / agents offer their Services to help you with the administrative part of crossing the border. In our case one of the border officers just connected us to one of the fixers and luckily this one was ok and really of help.

We are going the very same route, just a bit slower than you. We will arrive in Mongolia in August i think. With which vehicle are you travelling? Lets stay in contact, would be great to meet somewhere along the way!

Hi Cat
Good idea, will keep you posted when we 'guestimate' overtaking you with our Landrover defender on a dusty tadjikistan road ;-)
For now, safe and great travels
