Terrorism activities in Osh region

Is the road, border or area open and accessible to foreigners? Is there danger?

Terrorism activities in Osh region

Post by m2b »

Hello
I am planning to cross the Stans by motorbike next summer (2016). I read more and more warnings about the Fergana valley and the Osh region. Has anyone been there recently and heard about the roads to avoid (if needed)? thanks

Hi m2b,

could you direct us to the articles you have been reading? I have not heard anything about terrorism in Kyrgyzstan. There was a violent revolution targeting Uzbeks in Osh in 2010, and the Uzbek government killed many of its citizens in Andijan in 2007. Since then, it's been quiet. The enclaves are to be avoided, but don't worry, you won't accidentally stray into them. I have never heard of terrorism in Kyrgyzstan, as it is defined by Western media nowadays.

Leaders in the region (just like leaders in the West) love it of course, and play up the perceived danger to beef up security spending and expand their authoritarian ways.

Hi Steven

Well, there are countless reports. Whether they reflect the realty or not is another story. Hence my question on the forum.
a few reports:

I wouldn't be too alarmed by those reports. You basically have an incident in Bishkek (far from the Ferghana Valley), border shooting near the Tajik-Kyrgyz enclaves, and some threats being hyped as ISIS and reported on skeptically. I suppose one could read news reports and think Belgium and France are dangerous places to visit, too (of course Central Asia is more volatile, but it's not something that would worry me at all as a tourist).
