Pamir Highway in Winter

Is the road, border or area open and accessible to foreigners? Is there danger?

Pamir Highway in Winter

Post by WitekM »

Hi,

I will be travelling to Russia and Kazakhstan, between October and December. Then I would like to travel to Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. I know that winter might be very harsh, I am from Poland so temperatures up to -20 are fine (even lower). What I would like to know is if there is any way of travelling across both countries in winter, I know that some people did such thing. How to cross from Kyrgyzstan to Tajikistan in winter? I am interested in northern parts of Tajikistan, including Dushanbe perhaps. Then I would have to go back to Bishek. I have unlimited amount of time for my journey. Any tips?

I think transport will be pretty much the same as any other time of year: share taxis.

I'm not sure what you mean by northern Tajikistan. The area around Khojand and down to the Fann mountains is the most northern part of the country, but not usually accessed via Kyrgyzstan. Do you mean this area, or the Pamirs in the east?

Anyway, here's a blog entry from a couple who did the Pamir Highway in deep winter:

When I was in the Pamirs in late October it really wasn't that cold at all, with sunny days reaching perhaps 15-20° but nights dipping well below freezing. In Khojand it would be significantly warmer.

Thank you for your reply. Some people say that travelling in winter is too difficult or even impossible. What's the best way of getting from Kyrgyzstan to Tajikistan (avoiding Uzbekistan)?

Well, you can theoretically get a marshrutka or share taxi from Osh to Batken and then use the Batken-Isfara crossing, but you need to make sure that the marshrutka will not go through the Uzbek enclaves along the way (you would need an Uzbek visa). Since most marshrutkas do go through the enclaves, this can be a problem if you are stopped.

Is it possible to get to Uzbekistan from Kazakhstan via train and then get to Kyrgyzstan?
