Driving my 2wd car to Tashkent

Is the road, border or area open and accessible to foreigners? Is there danger?

Driving my 2wd car to Tashkent

Postby jornk » Mon Mar 13, 2017 12:22 pm

Hello everyone!

Me and a friend have our roadtrip planned:
We leave the Netherlands the end of May and plan to drive to Astrakhan (Russia) first.

From there, we are planning to continue on the following route:

Atiraw-Beyneu-Jasliq-Khiva-Bukhara-Samarkand-Tashkent-Turkestan-Aralsk-Aktobe and back to Russia.

We are taking a 2wd 'normal' car. At the Caravanistan site and forums I read that especially the parts from Beyneu to the border, and from the border to Kungrad have bad conditions. Do you guys think it doable in a normal car?

Offcourse I read about the petrol shortage as well. Some people managed to bring a few jerrycans of spare fuel from Kazachstan. Others say that you cannot bring more than 20 extra litres over the border? What are your experiences with bringing petrol across the KZ-UZ border?

Thanks!

Cheers, Jorn.

potholes, but you can do it. it is not off-road style, but in some sections it is better to choose the track near the main road.
(the same - road astrakhan-atyrau).
some sections in the suburbans in kzh are under construction, the rest from the itinerary - very good roads.

Thanks for your reply and the info!

We changed the middele part of our itinerary. From Tashkent, we take the Taraz-Almaty-Balkhash-Burabay-Kurgan route.
But the Beyneu-Jasliq road is still the most challenging part, i guess.

and back to west?
suppose you will hate yourself for such idea.
on the road kurgan-moscow (both variants west from ufa - through samara or kazan) you'll meet more than zillion of trucks and lorries, usually in "convoys" of some 10-20 trucks, speeding about 70-75kph, every 2-3km. in both directions. and it is not a two-lanes-highway.
try to overtake such a "convoy"...
russian roulette itself.

i choose the road once - and never again.
never!

i would prefer to drive back to shimkent from astana, and then to aktobe-uralsk-saratov-voronezh. the road is almost empty and in good condition, and the fuel is cheap. the only (very) bad section is uralsk-ozinki (was bad in 2014, i suppose it could have change because of the expo).
