Afghan Wakhan - Fever Illness

Post by hikingcanadian »

I've been meaning to write a trip report about my 6 days in the Afghan Wakhan Corridor Ishkashim to Sarhad, and I will do in the future when I get the chance, but I wanted to share some news.

I traveled with a friend from Osh to Eshkashem in late June, and then I solo crossed into Afghanistan and went to Sarhad, hiked in the mountains for a while. Then returned to Tajikistan and flew home from Dushanbe 3-4 days later.

A few days after returning from Central Asia, I got strong body aches, chills, and a high fever. I was in bed for a few days. For the past 3 months, I've been plagued by these fever episodes. I saw doctors and specialists in Europe (where I was working), but they were not able to figure it out. I recently returned to Canada where I've been seeing doctors here as well and they have also struggled to figure it out. My blood tests return negative for malaria or other common infections, but the doctors both here and in Europe are adamant I got it while in Afghanistan. My friend who traveled with me up to Afghanistan is fine.

At one of the local homes I stayed in Khandud, I recall seeing several flees hopping around the carpeted floor, but I could have caught it anywhere. The hygienic standards are definitely much lower in Afghanistan.

Be sure to get the right vaccines and take proper precautions to ensure your well-being. I'm a healthy male in my early 20s, but now these recurring fevers have set me back in my professional and personal life.

If anyone has any helpful information, it'd be appreciated.

Update: I tested positive for Lyme's Disease. Did not get it in Afghanistan, it just incubated and symptoms came up shortly after returning from my trip.

Nonetheless, know there is 0 health infrastructure in the Afghan Wakhan. Had the severe symptoms kicked in a week earlier when I was in Sarhad, I could've been in a very bad situation.
