South Ossetia from North Ossetia

Is the road, border or area open and accessible to foreigners? Is there danger?

South Ossetia from North Ossetia

Postby rfoltz » Thu Mar 22, 2018 3:19 pm

As of mid-February 2018 the Roki tunnel border post was no longer manned, allowing free transit between North and South Ossetia. I saw the abandoned guard posts between Nar village and the tunnel but didn't cross myself since I needed to go to Georgia afterwards and didn't want to take any risks, but a South Ossetian friend insisted there are no more border controls and hence no more stamps. Not sure what the implications are for getting a South Ossetian visa, but my friend didn't seem to think I needed one. I plan to go next year but in the meantime anyone interested in visiting South Ossetia would be well advised to inform themselves in Vladikavkaz as to the current situation at the border -- Ossetians seem to consider its apparent erasure as permanent, reflecting their desire to unite the two parts of their country. Worth noting that Ossetian language and culture have seen a major revival in the South, where many important traditional cultic sites are located. (This is what I plan to research next year.)
You definitely cannot enter or leave South Ossetia via Georgia, where evidence of having visited South Ossetia carries a potential three-year prison sentence.

Thanks for this.

Yes, the SO authorities are still seeking to unite with NO (they call it "re-unite", which is historically incorrect), but the green light for a referendum on that is still not given by the Kremlin, which is what the leadership of SO implies in comments when asked about repeated postponement. It looks like the Kremlin has opted for steps of de facto annexation through ways that have less risk of creating headlines in the world (in other words, staying below the radar, and implementing other facts on the ground).

Such as fully integrating the immigration zone, removing actual border checks, and parallel to that increasing "border security" at the administrative boundary line SO-Georgia.

If you haven't done already, I would advise you to check this page (bottom half, for foreign passport holders), and use the contact details in the bottom for further enquiries.

As far as I know this still stands.

According to this news report of just over 2 weeks ago, there is still a document/passport check at the border - but in this case in th edirection of getting back into Russian Federation.

I drove across and back in 2010; at that time there was a Russian border control at Nizhny Zarmag on the Russian side. There was also a pretty informal border post on the RSO side.

I had been in contact with a member of the MFA in Tskhinval beforehand and had permission to enter; the guy at the RSO border post called through to confirm that I had permission.

Are you saying that there is now no Russian border control at Nizhny Zarmag? I find this very surprising.

Got no answers after writing to MFA.
The Vadim guy that is mentioned on the caravanistan website asked me 759€ for a South Ossetian tour.
Another company, Caucasus explorer asked me 500$ per day...

Between North (Russia) and South Ossetia there is a border on the russian side and a check point on the southern Ossetia. It is the only access point to the Caucasian republic and it is compulsory to require the Ossetian permit and the Russian multi-entry visa.
