Current road conditions on the Pamir Highway

Is the road, border or area open and accessible to foreigners? Is there danger?

Current road conditions on the Pamir Highway

Post by brussell19 »

Hello,

I'm looking at goingfrom Dushanbe to Osh via the Pamir highway from May ~14~21 and am wondering if there is any information on current closure due to landslides etc? Also, I think this trip in this time frame is feasible using shared local transport, but would love any confirmation or denial of that.

In terms of security I'm assuming that the situation is ok given my Tajik news alert and the fact that I got a GBAO permit without any issues in Bishkek yesterday.

Thanks!

Can you give directions please?
Thanks

1 very long day from Dushanbe to Khorog, another day Khorog to Murgab, one more long day Murgab to Osh.

But the more interesting part of the region is along the Afghan border (i.e., Ishkashim, Bibi Fatima, Yamchun) where there are jeeps/marshrutkas from Khorog to Langar and points in between but no further.

Check my blog for trip details of my trip along that route last summer by a combination of public transport and hitching: http://www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/povertyjetset/

Hi
May I ask where you are now and if you have any up to date information on the closure of the GBOA area?
Thank you

tajik consulate easy to find in bishkek. the roads are crap. but depends on ur idea of what crap is. no where near as bad as africa......or SE Asia, 10 years ago.
if ur on a bike, head winds are more of a problem, as is the lack of lots of good food. pamir highway food is all about eggs, potatoes, bread and chai...

I found it very hard to find the Tajikistan embassy!
So here are directions from my guest house

Directions to Tajikistan embassy from Sakura guest house.
No roads are marked and the traffic needs to be watched.
It took me 2 attempts to find the embassy so I thought I'd give detailed info on the route.

With your back to the guest house door turn right along the lane and then right onto the road that leads you up to the main road.
You want to turn left at the cross roads. I got off the bike and walked across. Much safer.
Mileage count starts from here.

You are now on the main road and continue for Km 1.75 until you reach the big junction with the M39 ( not that it it marked )

Turn right / South
(You pass under a flyover.)
Long stretch here.
Green BP garage on left
Blue/ yellow garage on right
Green garage on right.
At next big cross roads ( a blue garage on left) turn right.
An orange block of flats / apartment is on the right hand corner.
Milage at this point is 5.35 Km.

At 6.45 Km turn left at traffic lights. Blue Bishkek garage is where you make the left turn.

At second set of traffic lights turn left down a bumpy road.
There is a Castrol sign on a building to the right when you make this turn.

The road is rough but go right down to the end.
Maybe 1 Km

At the T junction you will see the Embassy.

There are 2 doors to the embassy. You want the one on the left next to the brown sentry box. Its facing you at the T junction.

Nice folk inside.
Open 9-5
Closed for lunch 1-2

At time of writing ( May 2015), 75 USA dollars for visa and 100 Kyrgyzstan Som for GBAO permit.
Need a passport picture and copy of passport.

Total Km from guesthouse to embassy : 7.95 Km
It took me 45 mins. Sometimes on the road, sometimes the pavement/ sidewalk.
Av speed 10 Km per hour
Max speed 22 Km per hour.

Good luck.

The Tajiik Embassy in Bishkek is in Google Maps (as is the Sakura Guesthouse), so that's probably an easier way to find it.

This is a reply I received from a humanitarian group working in the area....

The road to Murghab is closed trough Gunt valley where the debris-flow has occurred but you can travel via Ishkashim if you wish (from Murghab you go to Ishakisim and come to Khorog the other way).

There is an issue with the road towards Dushanbe right now (in Vanj district) and it is expected to be opened today or tomorrow. The situation is very changeable these days and no one can predict what would happen next, so we cannot suggest if you should travel or not. If you are ready to get stuck at some point for couple of days I think it is ok, but if timing is an issue maybe you should delay.
