DUSHANBE, May 15, 2015, Asia-Plus – Tajik authorities have suspended issuing permits to foreign citizens for visiting the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO).
Rezo Nazarzoda, the deputy head of the Committee for Youth, Sports and Tourism Affairs under the Government of Tajikistan, says entry of foreign citizens to Gorno Badakhshan has been temporarily suspended because of uneasy situation in Afghanistan’s districts bordering the region.
Correct! Unfortunately no permits are being issued as of Friday gone. Whether the threat of terrorist activity across the border is real or not is a matter for speculation, but either way it's bad news for travellers looking for a permit. Keep an eye on it... people living here tell me that these permit bans can last from a couple of days to indefinitely... hopefully you will get lucky!
Thanks Funkyboots.
I am in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan for 2 months from next week.
Any idea on good cycle trips in those areas that do not include the blocked area?

Hi! We are in Bishkek and went to the embassy just to find out about this situation, and they DO are expending the visa PLUS the GBAO permit. They also told us that all the information in internet is false, that the border and the Pamir route is open to tourist.
We've just arrived here in Bishkek, planning to do all the visa stuff and we don't know what to do regarding this situation. If we can't do the Pamir, we are not going to Tajikistan at all. I wonder if they say there is no problem just for a collecting matter, and then in the border we might can't cross... :S
Oh, we went to Tajikistan embassy in Bishkek this morning because there is some american guy here in the hostel and the permit was refused to him on friday (he is on business purpose and after the refusal tried to manage to get the permit through some Tajik's contacts, but no success). In the embassy there was like 8/9 tourists, they all have been given the GBAO permits.
I can only report what tje traveller i met was told on friday which was that he was refused the permit. That.s great news that other people are getting permits, though!
This is good news.
Florvallejo thank you
But are you saying that the visa and permit that is issued in Bishkek could be refused for access to GBAO area?
