Two possible itineraries, feedback appreciated!

Post by stevesayskanpai »

Hmm, I'm really not sure about the route for 7 days in Uzbekistan. I'm trying to use the train times to plan (https://www.seat61.com/Uzbekistan.htm) and basically have to decide between:

1. Tashkent - train - Bukhara - train - Samarkand - overnight train - Urgench - overnight train - Tashkent

1 Tashkent to Bukhara (08.00-11.47), half day in Bukhara
2 Bukhara full day
3 Bukhara to Samarkand (08.05-11.27), half day in Samarkand
4 Samarkand full day
5 Samarkand full day 2 (too much time?), overnight train to Khiva (23.51-13.05)
6 Khiva half day after arriving
7 Khiva half day, overnight train to Tashkent (15.20 - 10.28)
8 A few hours rest, then onto another train! Tashkent to Almaty (15.10 - 09.31)

2. Tashkent - overnight train - Urgench - bus/taxi - Bukhara - train - Samarkand - train - Tashkent

1 Day in Tashkent, Tashkent to Urgench (19.30-13.05)
2 Khiva half day after arriving
3 Khiva to Bukhara by taxi/bus (5 hours?), Bukhara half day
4 Bukhara full day
5 Bukhara to Samarkand (8.05-11.27 OR 15.21-17.00), Samarkand half day (if early train)
6 Samarkand full day
7 Samarkand to Tashkent (11.27-14.45), half day in Tashkent
8 Tashkent to Almaty (15.10 - 09.31)

As you can see, 1. involves hardly any time in Tashkent, and two overnight trains next to each other. 2 looks better I think but I'd appreciate any feedback! Thanks.

Hi Steve,

the train times on Seat61 are not up to date, though. Try one of the sites we recommend on the Uzbek train page: http://caravanistan.com/transport/train/uzbekistan/ I am using Tutu a lot recently.

Also, not quite sure when you are going but train times might change if you are planning 6 months out.

My general suggestion is always Tashkent - Bukhara - Samarkand - Urgench - Tashkent or vice versa. if you want to do it all by train. But if you don't mind the long taxi ride to Bukhara, I would agree plan 2 looks pretty solid. You need to spend a little bit of time in Tashkent, and driving through the desert is an interesting experience as well. Make sure you leave early in the morning.

BTW, I just wrote a full guide to Tashkent, have a look, especially the 3 walks I think would be very helpful. http://caravanistan.com/uzbekistan/center/tashkent/
