That makes sense then. Most Tajik tour operators keep insisting the border is closed even though it has been open for 2 years now.

That is a speedy and comforting reaction. I suppose if somebody get stuck at the Kulma border, this Forum will be the first place to get the news!.

Ok, Qolma is open - it's good news. But there's another question.
If I have visa-free regime with TJ (I've got Ukrainian passport) and will be going from China to Tajikistan, I need GBAO permit. Where to get it? Because I don't think It's good idea going through GBAO without permit after IS attack on bicycle team last year.

You can get GBAO permit in Dushanbe (probably not useful for you), from an embassy, or possibly from a tour agency.

Does anyone know if it's now possible to cross from Pakistan and go straight to Qolma (instead of going all the way up to Kashgar)?

Depends in your means of transportation.swamp gum wrote:Does anyone know if it's now possible to cross from Pakistan and go straight to Qolma (instead of going all the way up to Kashgar)?
If you are self-driving a foreign registered Car/Motorbike/van.....
You have to go to Kashgar so your agent can get the paperwork done.
When Walking, cyckling, Public transportation.... Straight to Tajikistan should Work.

Hi all,
We (two cyclists en route from London to Tokyo) are currently in Uzbekistan about 2 days from Dushanbe, and thanks to all the optimism on this forum, are looking forward to crossing into China at the Qolma Pass en route to Pakistan during the first week of May or so. Will update this thread on our experience in due course, and hope it's not only positive news, but also of some value to all!

Hello!
We crossed the border by bike on the 15/05/2019 and there was no problem.
We met another cyclist we crossed on the 27/05/2019 also without any problems.
Enjoy, it's really a nice pass!
