Crossing China from Mongolia to Laos or Vietnam in 2020 and from Nepal to Kirgisistan in 2021

Hi motorized travellers

We plan to cross China at the end of September or begin of October 2020 from Mongolia (Zamyn-Uud) to the Laotian or Vietnamese border (Lao Cai). We are a young family (my girlfriend, our doughter and me) from Switzerland travelling with a camper van. In order to reduce costs in China we are looking for company from other motorized (car/bike/camper van) travellers.

In spring (begin of may) 2021 we plan to enter China via Nepal, travelling to Lhasa and the border of Kirgisistan (Kashi) and thus are looking for company again.

The dates are to a certain extend adaptable to your own plans. Lets negotiate

I'd be highly surprised if you are allowed to cross from Nepal into Tibet in your own campervan. Generally you'll only be issued with a travel permit into the province upon signing onto a tour with a guide who will remain with you for the duration. The rules for entry into Tibet by foreigners are very strict, and barring all but the strangest circumstances independent travel is forbidden.

Well, given that you need a guide to self-drive anywhere in China, I'm not sure why Tibet would be off-limits.

Yeah fair call..... I did some reading and does seem to be possible, but will need a Tibetan based travel company to arrange all necessary permits, plus guide, plus if you are really unlucky on application an additional escort vehicle. Gonna be big $$$... Seems like an amazing trip though.

Do you know whether it is possible to hire one guide for several motorized travellers travelling in a caravan? Otherwise I do not understand the use of organizing a group to safe money....

Is there something like a car delivering service in China. The idea is that you can have your car delivered from border to border and travel by public transport instead.

I am also on search for a tour crossing china. I am also from switzerland but a solo motorcycle driver.
I search something wether from Kirgistan, Kasachstan or Mongolia, but into Nepal if this is maybe an option for you.
My travelplans are, that I would be in Kirgistan around end of July or August in Mongolia. Since you are also from Switzerland,
can I ask you how you arrange your china visum? Do you do it allready in Switzerland or do you arrange it somewhere on the way?

we plan to cross China at similar dates. Te idea is to be in South-East-Asia the winter of 2020/21. Route and precise dates are still open.
We’re a couple (with a dog) traveling in a camper van.

Crossing China from Mongolia to Laos is a great idea but as blakep76 said entry rules by Tibet are very strict. Keep yourself up to date with the rules of all the countries you are going to travel to. I hope you will enjoy your Laos Vietnam tour.
