travel buddy August, snorkeling? Kayaking? cross border with rental car?

Postby miisakissa » Fri Feb 26, 2016 9:27 pm

Hello!
I'm planning to visit Kyrgystan for the first time this August/beginning of September.
My plans are still pretty vague, e.g. I don't even have a travel buddy yet, but I'm optimistic everything will work out just fine.
While I've been browsing the internet and some books about Kyrgyztan some questions have come up.
Maybe someone of you out there has an answer or is also interested in knowing.

I like snorkeling (even in cool mountenous streams - where they form kind of pools). Are there any good places for snorkeling? Surely I would prefer warm water but also dipping into cool water for some minutes can be fun.

Is cayaking popular? I have two kayaks of my own but of course I can't bring them with me as I'm planning to fly into BIshkek.

Also, getting a rental car will be the means of transportation of my choice. (For the days when I won't be part of a tour-group). I was wondering whether it is possible cross a national boarder with a rented car ( to China in my case). Or do most (all?) rental companies by contract prohbit doing that? I've experienced that in other countries.

Last but not least: feel free to contact me if you will be around in August/Sep. and want to join me in having some fun in Kyrgyztan (not only outdorsy sporty things, also just relaxing, strolling through basars,...)

You can get cross-border rentals, but not for China. Driving in China is very difficult, and requires either a Chinese driver's licence or a Chinese driver/escort in your car.

There are only a few places to get car rentals (luckily for you, they are mainly in Bishkek). Steve can direct you to his preferred partners, or you can poke around here some more to get more info.

I haven't heard of snorkeling, though I suppose people do it a little on the beaches of Issyk Kul. Kayaking seems like a more natural fit, but I don't think the infrastructure exists to supports that yet.

Thanks for the information on driving in/to China. Damn... sounds like it's not possible to get to Kashgar self-driving. In Kashgar I would like to see the Sunday market.
But the wikitravel entry on Kashgar says it's not difficult to get there from Osh by bus and even shared taxis which are apparently cheaper than bus service.

For renting cars I've found out ihn.kg is supposed to be a good choice.
Issyk kul must be wonderful for kayaking. (I'm talking about calm water like lakes, not wild water)

How warm does Issyk Kul get in summer time anyway?

Hi miisakissa,

The water temperature in July on the surface is a comfortable 68° to 73° F (20° to 23° C), and in January it is 36° to 37° F (2° to 3° C). The water of the Issyk-Kul is clear blue in color with a visibility of up to 60 feet (20 m).

I know people dive there, but you won't see any colourful fish. Kayaking is only popular on wildwater rafting but you can ask tour operators if it's possible on slow water too. In Kazakhstan, Ili river is a place near Almaty where the water is calm and that is popular for kayaking.

Thanks for that information, Steve!

After all I've read and seen (in pictures) about Kyrgyztan I really want to go there this August.
Now all I have to do is find a travel buddy. ... Kyrgzystan is not that well-known as a travel destination among my friends, but let's see... ;)

Greetings from Thailand. My Ural sidecar motorbike is in hibernation in Mongolia and I plan to explore Kyrgyzstan this summer. Kayaking would be epic and for that I plan to bring my packraft. Happy to connect and coordinate if/when schedules permit. Cheers,

Hey Lisa,

I admire your commitment to snorkeling! I'm also planning on being in Kyrgyzstan in August and keen to join forces with people for hiking/general adventures. Happy to consider sharing car rental with you/others if plans (which I don't really have yet) match. \

Let me know if you want to compare ideas and itineraries.

Will
