Leaving a car in Georgia

Post by gandalf3000 »

So, I'm new here, and this might be a strange question. However in 2021 I travelled to Georgia by car from Europe, This was in an old Volvo, we entered by land from Turkey. Now here's the thing, we ended up leaving this car in Georgia, we gave it away to some Georgian people we met through a friend. (the car wasnt really worth anything)
We took the license plates back home, and officially listed the car as exported in our home country. We left Georgia by plane.

Now recently, I found out this isn't really allowed, and you can get fined for leaving your car in Georgia for longer periods of time, according to some its even impossible to leave the country without your car. However this wasn't the case for us, we left easily, with the license plates in our suitcase. they barely looked at them, we never heard anything about it. I assume the Georgian's that took the car, imported it themselves (if that is even possible?) or they used it for parts.

My question now is, is there anyone with any experience in have a car for longer periods in Georgia, or even exporting it to Georgia? Would I likely get in trouble if I went back to Georgia at some point? If so, how?
I'm not in contact with the people that received the car anymore, so I don't know what exactly happened with the car.

Hi,

yes, you car is registered by customs together with your passport in their computer system.
You can leave without the car, but your car can not stay more than 60(?) days in Georgia. There are hefty fines.
I have no idea if you will have problems next time that you enter Georgia - but with all the computer systems today there is a chance that you might get problems.
Why don't you contact customs by email and ask if there is any kind of problem linked to your passport?
