Biking from Urumqui to Khorgas

Postby edoardo » Fri May 04, 2018 1:55 pm

Hi folks!
I will start on June a long bike trip from Mongolia to Europe. Around July I guess I will be somewhere around in Xinjiang. As i need to reach the border of Kazachistan (Khorgas), my idea is not to ride the flat G30 but the mountain road G216 and then G218 till the border. As it looks like really a wild road with high passes is there anyone who has experienced this road? Suggestion? will it be open for bike? It seems also there are some unpaved parts.. Any suggestions or comment is very welcome.

Thanks
Edoardo

I think Ed Shoote cycled this road last year http://welovemountains.net/

See his track at Strava and further report on Caravanistan

We just completed our China crossing by bike from Shanghai to Khorgas. It was great until we got to
Xinjiang province. After that, the security became almost unbearable with 5-6 passport checks a day, with each one taking up to an hour. In several places we were told that the area was off limits to foreigners and we had to take a bus. If we stayed the night in a town, the police followed us around and waited outside the restaurant. Once when we gave them the slip (just for the fun of it) both the hotel and the police called and texted us to ask where we were. Finally in Khorgas, it took 7 hours to cross the border. The Chinese could not have made the process more confusing, convoluted or time consuming. All the while being unfailingly polite. I had a fantastic stay in China, but was glad to see the back of Xinjiang. Good luck in June!

Thanks for the update. Were you travelling through the main road (G30) or small roads?
