A Car Question

Postby hartmonster3 » Thu Jul 12, 2018 1:17 pm

Hello any motorheads out there? I have an interesting problem. We're driving a 1998 Honda CR-V (yeah, old as heck!) and we're experiencing a strange phenomenon regarding our coolant. Everytime we start a driving day I check the levels and usually it needs a small topping off, maybe no more than a quarter liter. This happens almost every time. Today on the way to Baku the engine temp guage was starting to rise so we pulled over, cooled it off and added probably a liter and a half or almost two of coolant. The car does not leak coolant and the oil looks uncontaminated as well. No smokey exhaust or strange smells so seems it's not ending up in the radiator either. Is this just a case of things being really hot and the coolant mixture evaporating? If not does anyone have a theory as to where the coolant is going? Either way we'll always travel with a bunch of extra fluid but I'm concerned about more serious damage. Thanks for reading!

It's probably a slow head gasket leak, but check every part of the cooling system for any signs of leakage.

Pull the carpets up in the cabin to see if coolant is leaking from the hater matrix into the cabin.

Maybe it is a bit leaking and so not under pressure which allows it to boil earlier causing you to loose coolant.

It can be as simple as the radiator cap being bad and letting everything out.

If not enough coolant inside the engine, yes it will get hot.

When engine is cold, always check under radiator cap and expansion tank for coolant level.
