The Silk Road…it’s only because everyone understands what you mean by it that I still use this misnomer. The links towards India and Arabia were as important as those to Europe, and silk was just a minor part of the trade. Most importantly, there was not 1 road. Instead, a multitude of caravan routes crossed the heart of Eurasia. So now, when you start looking at that map, fluorescent marker in hand, you find yourself hesitating. What is the optimal route?
It depends on your interests and constraints of course, and we are happy to give you some personalised advice in the forums, but I thought it might be useful to put forward some ideas based on my experience traveling and talking to many other travelers in the region over the years.
I based myself on some of the standard categories (backpacker, single-country or long trip, cyclist, self-driving) but always tried to push the itinerary a bit beyond the standard found in the main travel guides. There’s also no indication of time, I don’t know you well enough to say anything about that.
