In the end, we just rented a garage in Mongolia and crossed the border to China by train. Nobody asked anything about the car whatsoever, so basically you can just leave it in Mongolia and pick it up next time you enter without any bureaucracy whatsoever (no guarantee though, but for us this worked).

Has anybody ever done this? We wanted to go from Astana to Turkistan, without taking the M36, but rather drive through the heart of Kazakhstan with a Fiat Punto, so no 4x4. Is that doable? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Alternatively, do you know if there's the possibility to just leave your car there, leave the country for a few months and then come back for it?
