Buying maps in Kyrgyzstan/Bishkek

Post by steven »

I have gotten an update that the cartographic institute in Bishkek is closed. Any news regarding that is welcome.

Otherwise, any news regarding good places for trekking maps in Bishkek or Kyrgyzstan as a whole is very welcome.

Hi Steven,

I've been there yesterday (GeoID in Kievskaya Street 107 (42.87532N 74.59403E, same building as DHL). They have trekking maps (based on the Soviet military maps from the 80s, but with English town names, published in 2015 by Kyrgyzstan Trekking Union) in scale 1:200 000 for the following regions:
- north of Issyk Kul, incl. Chong Kemin gorge
- Karakol & surroundings
- internal Tien-Shan (i.e. surroundings of Son-Kul)

The trekking maps were 350 Som each (~€ 5).

I also bought a good map of all of Kyrgyzstan there (1:750 000, 650 Som/ € 8).

Also, there is an app for Android called Soviet Military Maps (Free/Pro) with the old maps - apparently one of the best resources for hiking in the area.

Ok, all still the same as before then. Soviet Maps app is already linked on the page I posted above, together with other resources for Soviet maps.

Hi,

Does anyone know if GeoID is still there? I am planning a trip to Kyrgyzstan next month.

Any updates about the English versions of the topographic maps?

Thanks in advance!

Would love an update if anyone knows where to get a map these days in Bishkek - the Alpine Club?
