FAMILY MOTORHOME TRAVEL

Post by victor rodamon »

Hi everyone.

MAIN IDEA: We are a family from Barcelona, travelling in a round trip from our city to as many of the 15 republics that years ago were part of the Soviet Union.
WAY OF TRAVELLING: We are travelling with our motorhome.
TIMING (spring and summer): From april to may, go from Barcelona to Iran, then after June July Central Asia from Iran to Kazakstan and russia up to Kazan, and finally August-beginning of September Russia-Kazan to Baltic countries, and may be Ukrania, Bielorus and Moldova....

So, my questions to the experts are:
1- is it easy/fast to get visa for Iran, Turkmenistan, Tadjikistan and Russia in any of this countries?: Armenia, Georgia, Azerbayan or Turkey?
2- in wich countrie is easier/faster to get these visas?
3- will we have problems with to get gas cilinders (propane or butane gas) in central asia?
4- will we have problems to get diesel for the motorhome in Central asia countries?
5-we were in central asia as backpackers ten years ago, and internet acces was really poor. Is it different now? Is it easy to connect to wifi arround?

If you have any suggestion for the travel, we will accept it! Our idea, because we have not a lot of time and we are travelling with kids, is just to travel stragiht, crossing countries without really having to make lot of extra miles to visit anything.....but we know that will be almost impossible with the kids.

Kind regards!

Hi Victor, you can find a lot of info on visa on this website.

For questions 1 and 2 see: https://caravanistan.com/visa/
It includes all the embassies, so you know for which combinatiation of embassy and country the result is.

3: gas cilinders locally are usually pretty big, but you can buy them.
We used a Safefill LPG bottle, and with the european adapter set, there was only one adapter that allowed us to fill the bottle in Central Asia and Russia.

4: Again the info is on this site. Typically only Uzbekistan is a problem for getting diesel, but there are gps points available where to get some.
Modern cars (Euro 5) might struggle with the low quality fuel.

5: you can get sim cards, depending on the country. Don't expect any good connectivity outside of the cities and into the mountains, other than that, it is fine.

Hi Lovetheworld!

Thanks a lot for the suggestiions and all the info. Really useful.

One more question: i understand that its easy to get LPG bottle arround there then, isnt it? Or do you think it's easier to get it in Europe and get the filling adapter somewhere there?

I was happy with the refillable bottle, so that it was always the same size, otherwise it wouldn't fit in our small van.

But maybe you can figure it out what the sizes are, or if you have lots of space for bottles, then it is okay.

I think I used this adapter mostly in Asia:

The Safefill LPG bottle is pretty expensive. But it is also lightweight and really safe. And in Europe you can fill it at LPG gas stations with the adapter set.
