Visited the KG border post late June and was told that road further on was closed due to rock slide. Not sure if that was just an excuse for political reasons. Maybe both.

Just met a guide in KG who told me the border openend one week ago. Can anyone confirm this?

Hi,
We tried yesterday to cross the border from Kyrgyzstan into Tajikistan. We applied in advance for a special border permit with the help of the Kyrgyzstan Tourism Department. When we arrived at the border, we had no problems to leave Kyrgyzstan into no-mans land but unfortunately the Tajik border did not let us in, so we had to return.
Everyone was really friendly, a Tajik border guy even drove 30 kilometers to reach his boss, but at the moment this border is not open for tourists and they cannot do anything.

Thanks for the quick update! That‘s sadly what i was expecting to hear. But the guide sounded so convincing (it opened last saturday, very precise info) i started to believe it
Was there a specific reason they didnt let you in? Because as far as i know before the Kyrgyz wouldnt let you even past their border..

They have been probably scammed..there is no need for a special border permit to cross at Kizyl art.

Someone probably gave a bribe from that "special permit" to let them through at the khirghiz border post even if they already knew they would be rejected at the tajik border post.
It is just a scam and a waste of time.

We are currently in Murghab and keep hearing rumours that the border recently opened for tourists. We heard via a tourguide and via another cyclist.

We could take the risk of leaving Tajikistan (if succesfull), but being denied acces in Kyrgistan.

Anybody got more information? Would be of great help!

Appears to be true. Article is in Russian so use Google Translate but in general it says exactly the same, border is again open for tourists!

That article raises more questions than it answers:

She stressed that the lists of tourists are sent to the Department of Tourism, which, in turn, petitions the Border Service. This may take 1-2 days.

On the Kyrgyz side this seems to be something that can only be done by a tour company. And from the Tajik side? Total mystery.

As usual, for independent travelers, this will probably be answered by someone showing up at the border on their bicycle and either being turned around or let through...
